Oscars in the goon…. (someone does dallas)

August 6th, 2007

Hello from Brisbane.
Its a very odd city and not much like vegas at all, more like birmingham. Although it is nice to be back in a place with buildings over 3 stories high.
Weve been here about 5days now, and spent far too much time in the hostel bar. We met a guy called Dj ont he bus on our way into Brisbane and through him we met a great group of people, who were all Irish and all had ridiculous nicknames including The Chief, Dallas, Minks, Superman and Jakeycakes(jaffacakes) and becuase the bar was loud when i first got introduced everyone thought my name was Geoff, so that stuck for the next 3 days. (Rob and craig were also in that group but they had nice normal names, but were equally lovely) They have all moved on now which is the unfortunatly the backpackers curse.

As well as drinking and stealing peoples hats, we also went to check out the Australia Zoo, the cultural and science museum and we have just got back from the tour of the XXXX brewary.
The Zoo was awesome even though we dont liek steve irwin (which can get you lynched in this country) and also they have his little daughters face plastered all over the zoo and its very very creepy. On the plus side we did get to see a giant toitoise sneeze.

We have made a change to our plans, so we will only be in Surfers and Byron for 4 days each, 5 in sydney and then a week in melbourne ( so we will be able to fit in the tour of the neighbours set) I will post the changes at some point so you can see where we will be.

We are off to the hotel tomorrow which we have been bought for rach’s birthday (thank you!) Then we have the planatarium and a concert on wednesday, and a trip to see miss saigon on thursday.
See you all soon
Steff and Rach x

An Australian Brum…. that takes a bit of thinking about….

So what official nicknames did you end up with then? Your chance to re-name yourself.

And just to let you know… I don’t understand the post title at all.

Love your commentary Steff - can you get Rach to write a bit or is she delgating this job to you!

Rach - tried to remind the family about your blog site - hopefully someone will get their act together! I’m sure if Grandad had internet access you’d get daily comments! Perhaps I’ll ask him to dictate a comment to me - I give him a running commentary of your trip every time he rings. He’s coming to stay at our house to feed the cats while we are in Wales - I’ll log him on to the website at some stage so he can see it.

Hope you got my text with Mal and Ellen’s details. Hope you manage to get to see them - I know they’d love to see you and I’m sure you’d get a bit of pampering and a taste of real Aussie life. I’ll email them today and give them your blog site and telephone number.

Wedding was great - still can’t believe Dad hit the dance floor (there is photographic evidence but unfortunately not on my camera!) We had a lovely day in Portsmouth doing history stuff (Dad was very obliging - think I must go to Kosova more often!!!) lots of love Mum K

I’m affraid also that i haven’t got a clue what the title is about. Don’t believe everything you hear from Mum, yes i did hit the dance floor, and more than once i hasten to add! But it wasn’t the drink!! I’m still not sure why i did, as you know i dance like a spider with broken legs :-)

I’m off to find the photos and burn them.

    Dad K xx

well i happen to like the title and I’m amazingly jealous that you’re going to the neighbours set, will u get to spot any of the actors? not that ill know who any of them are. what noise do tortoises make when they sneeze?

  5. Dad S on August 6, 2007 11:03 pm

Well.. not ALL of the title is a mystery … which makes me think it’s better if I don’t understand the rest of it.

  6. Steff on August 7, 2007 4:43 am

    Right,
oscar is the name of a small plastic echidna that rach bought. Goon is an australian word for wine out of a box. Rach put oscar in a glass of wine hence oscar is in the goon. (we have a photo)
The other is play on a film title that became a running joke becuase we met some one called dallas. Now you all know :P

Now I have the web address will follow your progress ….
Happy birthday and love from Auntie chris and Uncle Geoff x
